In the summer the sun cause your hair color to fade quickly. This is especially true for red heads who find that there color has turned to a brass in the sun. LANA GELFENBEYN, senior colour technician at Toni&Guy Kitsilano gives us tips on keeping your hair colour looking great in the summer heat.
Shampoo & Conditioner…
Use a shampoo and conditioner that has a built in UV protector. The Brunette Goddess line from TiGi Haircare has a great color safe shampoo and conditioner. As an added bonus the shampoo and conditioner includes an additive that protects the hair from UV damage.
Smooth and Shine from TiGi is a great way to protect your hair from damage caused by hair appliances. It is also great at protecting your hair from heat and UV damage from the sun. Products like Smooth and Shine are more effective than shampoos and conditioners because they are designed to be left in the hair.
Many other haircare lines include shampoos and conditioners with UV protection. However make sure that the shampoo and conditioner is also color safe, otherwise you may be doing more damage then good. Color safe products have no-sulfate ingredients and are milder then normal shampoos and conditioners.
Smart & Savvy…
A hat is not the only cost affective way of protecting your hair from sun damage.
If you know you will be spending a long time at the beach or in the garden, use any conditioner and leave it in your hair while you are in the sun. This will provide a protective barrier against UV rays.
If you have spent a long time in the sun, don’t wash your hair with hot water. This will cause your hair to become even drier. Instead wash your hair in luke warm water.
And if your hair color has already faded because of the sun, Toni&Guy and most other salons provide a color touch-up service to bring your hair color back to life.
