2 Days Left Until The Egg Hunt!

At the salons we are getting prepped and ready to hand over our eggs to Easter Bunny for distribution. The eggs will be placed all around each salon; below are maps to help you see the area where the eggs will be hidden.

X-tenso Smoothing Treatment is here!

Before:

Step 1: We sectioned the hair and brushed the sections with the product and pulled it threw, we left the smoothing cream on for 20 minutes because she had stubborn hair. Then proceeded to wash it off and blow dry small sections with a round brush.

Step 2: Then we straightened over the hair with a specialty straightening iron in small sections.

Step 3: We went over the hair again in small sections with a neutralizer, left that on for 10 minutes.

Step 4: Rinsed the hair for five minutes then applied the mask rinsed that off and blasted the hair dry without using a brush.

After:

This particular process from beginning to end took a total of 2.5 hours and retails at $400 including take home shampoo, conditioner and mask.

The X-tenso service starts at $200 and goes up to $400 depending on how much hair you have and much product is used. The service can take anywhere from 2-3 hours. This service is by consultation only and can be book through the Alberni Street Salon at 604-608-4247

3rd Annual Crazy Hair Egg Hunt- IS BACK! April 23rd

After the success of Toni&Guy Vancouver's 1st and 2nd Crazy Hair Egg Hunts the team is back at it again. We are decorating 25 plastic Easter eggs with crazy hairstyles and hiding them around the two Toni&Guy Vancouver salons. The egg hunt will begin bright and early Saturday April 23rd. More details will be released next week.

Each egg will include a gift card to Toni&Guy Vancouver salons having a value anywhere from $5 to $100, and a yummy surprise from the easter bunny!

BC Paraplegic Association Women's Tea- Strike a Pose

Strike a Pose featured up and coming designer Teri Thorson as well as a fashion show by Nicole Bridger and Body Politic. This event gives women living with a physical disability in BC the opportunity to share experiences, have a little bit of girly fun and see the latest fashions. All the fashion were modeled by women with physical disabilities such as paraplegia and spina bifida.

We got a great comment this week about the stylists at the Creme De La Creme wedding show, and I could not help but write something about blow dries and updos:

"Hi there, I was wondering which Toni & Guy stylist you would recommend for a pretty, messy chignon or maybe an updo like what was done at the 2009 creme de la creme wedding show done by Toni and Guy...my hair is extremely long waist length and I was just wondering who to go to for styles... Thank you, -Sonia"

Thank you Sonia for your comment. We were really excited to be a part of Crème De La Crème wedding show. The stylists that were sent down were Omar and Antonio, they are both great at blow-dries and updos. The great thing about Toni&Guy is that all the stylists go through intense training for updos and blow-dries and are constantly learning and keeping up with the latest trends. Now that we are welcoming Fall, no one wants to do their hair when its raining and muggy outside so come in and let us take care of all your hair troubles with blow dries starting at $40 or an updo starting at $50. If your coming in for one of these services the best way to get the most out of your appointment is to bring a picture, "volume" and "back combing" can mean lots of different things, look through some magazines or bring in images especially if you have a specific look in mind.

How to get the most out of your appointment

At Toni&Guy we know it can be hard to sit in a strangers chair and tell them what you want in 15 minutes so we have decided to put together some tips to help you get the most out of your appointment

Be knowledgeable: When calling in to book your appointment be knowledgeable about your hair. When talking to the receptionist they want to know as much information to help find you the best stylist and or technician. Important things to mention are; let them know if you are going for a big change whether it is lots of length off or going from long to short, let them know if you have a budget or level of experience in mind, let them know if you have a time restriction (do you have to be out by a certain time?) and if you have a preference on a male or female stylist/technician. All these questions help the receptionist understand what your needs are and are crucial when it comes to your over-all experience.

Be Prepared: we know you have already looked at hair styles and have some favourites in mind when you walk in the door, don’t hide anything during your consultation make sure you bring pictures and cut outs of images that you like to help the communication between you at your stylist and or technician.

Be Realistic: Remember celebrities don’t change their hair colour instantly and pay drug store prices. When having a drastic change in mind it is great to let the receptionist know when your booking the appointment that you might need more time. Understand that technical procedures can use a lot of time and product so if you are nervous about price feel free to come in for a free consultation first before booking your appointment.

Be Prompt: Stylist have up to 9 clients a day and when one of them is late their whole day is disrupted so please come on time to assure you are properly taken care of.

Be informative: if you already have a look in mind please make sure you convey your opinion and make sure you are heard, sometimes stylist have their own vision too and part of the beginning of the appointment is set aside so that you can both come to an agreement together, don’t be scared to speak before the change begins at the end of the day IT IS YOUR HAIR!

Be open-minded: Before you say I’m contradicting myself remember that you came to a world-renowned hair salon with expertly trained staff, sometimes you just need to have an open mind when it comes to creating a vision for your new look, it is the job of the stylists and technicians to keep you happy and looking fabulous there is no reason for them to make you look like Britney Spears post head shave.

We were privileged to work on Vanessa Hudgens, Abby Cornish, Emily Browning and Jena Malone for this movie and could not be happier with the results.

We have been getting a lot of questions about our new treatment called the Brazilian Blowout, so when a client came in I jumped at the opportunity to track the process and results of the treatment to show everyone just what kind of results you can achieve and if this treatment is right for you!

Step 1) Client gets their hair washed

Step 2) Clients' natural hair is blow dried with no styling

Step 3) Treatment solution is applied and is then blow dried and straighten into the hair (picture taken when half the clients hair was finished to show the contrast)
Clients' hair is completely straighten

Step 5) Clients hair is washed, and a mask and serum is applied.

Step 6) The final step client gets there hair blast dried with no styling

These are the results of the amazing new treatment to keep you hair shiny, frizz free and manageable.

GIO

Gio is entering his 12th year in the hair and fashion industry. Originally as an assistant stylist to such notables as Sarah Mclaughlan, and CBC’s Gloria Macavenko. He then joined the original Toni & Guy team for their Canadian debut in Vancouver Robson street and eventually completed his training at the Oxford street Toni & Guy Academy in London, England, where he studied classic and advanced cutting techniques.

Most recently Gio completed his training as a teacher of the Toni & Guy technique at the Madison Avenue TiGi academy in New York City, where he studied under Thomas Osborne (Educational Director).

His career at Toni & Guy has allowed him to diversify his talents by participating in fashion shows and photo shoots. Shows ranging from Chanel to Club Monaco and working with professional models such as Noot Seear, as well as styling Mi Jung Lee for CTV News.

Photo shoot highlights include working with London stylist, Sasha Mascolo and more notably, in 2008, Gio’s mens collection photo was selected to appear in the Toni&Guy global collections photography book.

Aside from his career in hair, Gio is a world traveler and his journeys have taken him around the world, from Italy to India, and each year brings him a little closer to his goal of visiting all of the ancient wonders of the world.

He’s also had extensive training in the theatre and spent his youth on the stage. You may recently have caught him on the globally televised Opening Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics where he was proud to participate and share in his talents with an enormous cast of 3600 performers.

Specializing in all hair texture with an acute knowledge in curly hair, a session with Gio will leave you refreshed, renewed, and relaxed as he creates a personalized shape that is created with sensitivity and a distinct sense of style.

Rio has 23 years of experience in the hair industry. Toni&Guy is fortunate to have him as our Technical Creative Director, a position he has held for 8 1/2 years, since moving to Vancouver from Montreal, where he served as Technical Director for Pure Salon.

He is a North American Master colourist who has won many awards including; L'oreal Professional Look of The Year,two time winner of Toni&Guy Photographic award for Colourist of the Year and Toni&Guy Photographic award Total Look Winner.

Colourist to the stars, he has collaborated on numerous films, TV shows and print ads. Top 5: Hair Color Tips

After many months of thinking, you have decided to jump in and get your hair colored. You are nervous because it is not a cheap process and what if it doesn't look the way you want it to?

We sat down with Senior color technician, Deserey Cairns, to discuss tips on how to get the hair color you want.

Tip #5 : Don't be afraid to book a free consultation.
Consultations help a lot. Until a color tech sees your hair they can only estimate how long it is going to take. Also your hair type might not be able to hold the color that you want right away. Through a consultation you will be able to have a better idea of how long the process is going to take and if it will require multiple visits. A consultation also allows the color tech to get a better understand of what they will be working with when you visit for your appointment.

*Remember: Consultations should always be free and there is no obligation to book a hair appointment.

Tip #4 : Be honest about your hair history.
Don't be afraid to let the color tech know if you have colored your hair at home. Home color can be very damaging to your hair and affects how professional color will hold to your hair follicles. It is essential to know about previous color treatments so that the color tech can adjust the formula accordingly.

Tip #3 : Bring in a picture
Pictures are always great. Bring in pictures of people with the hair color you want. By having a tangible reference, color techs can make sure the color is an exact match to what you want.

*Remember: Choose pictures of people with similar haircuts and hair type. It is best if you can find a picture of someone who is the same ethnicity as you. This will ensure that your hair type is capable of holding the color you want without it being damaged.

Tip #2: Be realistic
So you are a brunette and you want to go platinum blonde. Unfortunately your hair is going to have to go through multiple treatments that could take more than two appointments. Your hair will most likely have to go through multiple conditioning treatments in order for it not to be damaged. Sometimes the hair color that you want is just not possible. Reasons could be hair type, hair damage or previous color jobs.

*Remember: Color technicians should have your hair as their number one priority. If they say that the color you want will not hold correctly or will damage your hair it is because they care about your hair.

Tip #1: Maintenance
Never forget maintenance. After 2 and a half hours in the salon your hair color looks amazing. Lets keep it that way. Remember to ask your color tech how you can maintain the color for as long as possible. Always purchase color safe shampoo and conditioner and try to limit the amount of heat you expose your hair to.

*Remember: You spent a lot of money on your hair color. Make sure to spend that extra $30 on a great color safe shampoo and conditioner.

On November 29th, Toni&Guy Vancouver and Dress For Success collaborated to transform the lives of 8 women.

Xmas came early for 8 lucky women from the YWCA and EMBERS (Eastside Movement for Business & Economic Renewal Society.) The 8 women were treated to a complete make-over from Toni&Guy Vancouver and Dress For Success. The 8 women spent the morning at the Toni&Guy Vancouver salon getting their hair cut and colored. In the afternoon, the women were whisked away to the Dress For Success warehouse for a complete wardrobe make-over. Once an outfit was picked, it was back to the Toni&Guy salon for make-up.

To end the day, the women were treated to a one-on-one photo shoot with fashion photographer Wilson Law.

Yesterday, November 29th, Toni&Guy Vancouver and Dress For Success partnered to transform the lives of 8 women from the YWCA and EMBERS organizations.

The 8 women were treated to a complete make-over, hair color and cut, make-up, and a brand new outfit.

To end the day, fashion photographer Wilson Law treated the women to a one-on-one photo shoot.

Pro Hair Graduate Ana Luisa Valdes: A Cut Above at Toni & Guy and the Contessa Awards

Toni&Guy Stylist Ana Luisa is a rising star in the Toni&Guy Vancouver team. She was recently profiled on the Blanche Macdonald website for her achievements.

Ana currently works at the Toni and Guy West 4th Ave salon and charges $65 for a womens haircut and $55 for a men's haircut.

Not every student at Blanche Macdonald arrives with a crystal ball providing step-by-step directions to a glittering future career. For Ana Luisa Valdés, Blanche Macdonald Pro Hair graduate and Art Director at the multiple award-winning Kitsilano, Vancouver branch of Toni&Guy, success has more to do with seizing inspiration and opportunities than long-term plans.

Hailing from Tampico, Mexico, the precise details of the start of Ana Luisa’s journey to Vancouver have already faded from memory.

“I really don’t remember how I started cutting hair,” she laughs, taking a break from her busy schedule at Toni&Guy. “It was just for fun. I had no training. It was something natural to me. My aunts would call and they’d get me to cut their hair with the same scissors they used in the garden. My sister-in-law ran a hair salon in Tampico. She saw me doing hair and said that I should help her in the salon.”

When the suggestion came that she should enhance her natural talent with some formal training, Ana Luisa investigated the possibility of a dramatic change of scenery.

“I’d been to Vancouver before, and I’d always liked it. One of my girlfriends from Mexico lived here and said that I should try out Blanche Macdonald. I heard it was one of the best schools. And the brochure they sent me looked really interesting.”

Omar Kanani, Managing Director of both Vancouver branches of Toni&Guy, takes up the story.

“After 32 years in the industry it’s necessary for me to give something back to the industry,” he explains. “I speak to every school in BC and tell them that Canadian hairdressers have the biggest potential ever.”

Omar should know. He’s been in the business for nearly thirty years, and has worked with celebrities including George Michael, the Backstreet Boys, Annie Lennox and Duran Duran. Omar started his career in England as part of the team the legendary Toni&Guy, the creators of Tigi and Bedhead products and a multi-award-winning high street salon with hundreds of busy salons across the UK.

He moved to Vancouver and set up Canada’s flagship branch of Toni&Guy. That salon proved so successful that it soon needed to move from Robson Street to a bigger location in Downtown Vancouver, where is was recognised as the city’s best salon by The Georgia Straight, among others, which preceded the opening of a second Toni&Guy salon in Kitsilano. Omar runs both, while still finding time to speak to aspiring hairdressers across BC.

“Blanche Macdonald has a very good system,” he continues. “The kids are excited and want to do more. I see the enthusiasm. I did a class with Ana Luisa’s group, and I must have inspired her.”

“Omar came to Blanche to speak to us about Toni&Guy,” continues Ana Luisa, “explaining what the company is based on and what they’re looking for. I went over to him and said, ‘I want to work for you’. But I didn’t have the right papers then.

“The next time I saw him I said, ‘Hey, do you remember me? Mexican? Blanche Macdonald? I’m gonna work for you.’ He was impressed.”

“She said she’d be working for me soon,” confirms Omar. “I said ‘Great. Congratulations!’ She was persistent and we held a job open for her. Persistency and belief are 99% of success in this world. For Toni&Guy and me people with belief are the people we want. I’m interested in their attitude and aptitude. Do they want to be the best? And are they like sponges? Can they take the information from us and adapt it to their life? Ana fits into our work ethic and she’s been a great asset to the company. She’s always put herself forward. She’s not scared of anything and she doesn’t shy away from anything.

“A lot of schools just focus on cutting and technique, and don’t worry about the person behind it. Where Blanche is more advantageous is that they strike that balance. Blanche and Toni&Guy is a good fit. They have great students. We have a great salon. The mindset doesn’t have to change.”

Omar was right to trust his instincts. His faith has been rewarded with a stylist with seemingly limitless enthusiasm for the salon and the haircuts they deliver.

“Every day is amazing,” she promises. “It’s a long day and it can be busy. But I love it. Making people feel good about themselves is a great feeling. I can tell them what would look better on them. I like giving advice to women. Sometime they come in with a mess. You’re helping them and you get the chance to be creative. For every single haircut you do there’s improvisation and room for creativity. It’s part psychology and part artistry.”

Ana Luisa’s artistry is going from strength to strength. Earlier this year she found the models, makeup artist and photographer, and with Toni&Guy’s guidance she entered the Contessa Awards, Canada’s longest-running and most prestigious hairdressing competition is now in its 21st year. Ana Luisa’s vision and hard work were rewarded as the panel of judges recognised her as one of the top ten hairdressing newcomers in all Canada

What inspired you to become a hairdresser?
Actually in high-school I had really bad hair. I would just tie it up because I didn't know what else to do with it. I was really self-conscious about my hair and thought it was really ugly. I finally decided to look into how I could get my hair to look the way I wanted it to. After that, I realized I would like to help others who had no idea what to do with their hair and so I pursued hairdressing.

Was there a salon or hair stylist you looked up to when you were getting started?
Actually I looked up to Toni&Guy. I visited the salon when I was 16 and it was the best haircut I had ever gotten. I knew that I wanted to work in a salon where the staff were recognized as the best.

What do you love most about cutting hair?
I really enjoy interacting with the different people that visit the salon. But what I enjoy most is teaching my clients how to style and maintain their hair at home. I think too many hairdressers forget that people want to know how they can maintain their haircut themselves.

Any haircuts that you enjoy doing or trends that you see?
I enjoy cutting all different types of hair and styles. I definitely see a trend towards loose waves and a natural look that isn't too messy. In terms of updos I see a lot of people going for a simple french twist.

What is your favourite fashion magazine?
I like InStyle because it has a broad range of information, from hair, clothes and makeup.

What are your favourite hair products right now?
The new Catwalk line is great. I really like the new hairspray and shine spray. The hairspray is great because it has a firm hold with a soft look. No one likes that crunchy look but everyone wants their hair to stay in place. I also like the Diamond Dreams shampoo. It smells really good and is not too heavy.

What do you enjoy doing outside of the salon?
I love to cook. I try a new recipe every week. I also like to travel and my favourite place would have to be Hawaii.
